A year full of exciting happenings concerning celebrities, music, movies and literature, 2013 offered no lack of interesting things to keep people engaged.
Some of the most talked about celebrities of 2013 included Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Kanye West according to HuffingtonPost.com. Some made waves because of their great success with albums and awards, while others earned the spotlight for much less desirable reasons.
Among the most talked about stories included Beyonce’s surprising and unannounced release of her album which sold over one million copies proving that she does not need to count on advertising to sell her music.
“My favorite album was the new Beyonce album because it’s Beyonce, and she can sing,” freshman Noah Langdon said.
Kanye West also achieved commercial success with the release of his album, Yeezus. His good fortune did not end there; he also became a father after having a baby, North West, with reality star Kim Kardashian.
Miley Cyrus is included among the celebrities who received negative publicity. She is ranked highest on Google’s list of top searches as a result of twerking during her VMA performance. She also faced opposition to her new racier image, as well as continued shocking and suggestive performances and music videos. The 19-year-old is no longer Disney’s sweetheart, Hannah Montana. Like her fans, she is growing up.
Justin Bieber also had his share of bad press for his continuing antics. Some of his shenanigans include egging a neighbor’s house, speeding, urinating in a restaurant mop bucket, possessing drugs and participating in altercations with the paparazzi. At 19, the young singer is rumored to be retiring.
Billboard ranks Justin Timberlake’s album, The 20/20 Experience, as the top selling album of 2013. He also finished the year with a sequel, The 20/20 Experience- 2of 2, also in the top 20.
“I like Justin Timberlake and my favorite album was his,” sophomore Sammi Doone said.
The second biggest selling album of 2013 was Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
Robin Thicke’s summer hit, Blurred Lines, is ranked as the number one song, while Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is not far behind in second place.
According to Dakota, an assistant manager at Rave, the most successful movies of 2013 were Frozen and Man of Steel. Dakota said that kids’ movies are usually the most successful, but superhero movies are popular because of the fan followings.
Langdon and Doone both said their favorite movie was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. It gained popularity because of the very loyal fan following for the books, but the action and plot helped it gain popularity with people who were unfamiliar with the books as well.
A few of the bestselling books of the year, according to HuffingtonPost.com, include Inferno By Dan Brown, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini and The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith, otherwise known as J.K Rowling.
Inferno is a thriller that encompasses history, art, codes and symbols. Brown also wrote the popular The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and The Lost Symbol.
Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed spans several generations and explores the relationship between parents and children. The setting moves between Afghanistan and the United States. His other, popular works include, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.
J.K Rowling is best known for writing the Harry Potter series, but in The Cuckoo’s Calling she explores adult crime. This detective novel is very different from Rowling’s earlier works. It lacks any kind of magic or supernatural abilities and includes more mature themes.
